Two tiny cups of sake in Chocolate Buddha put certain things into perspective, that is, Forest Gump was right. You never know what you're gonna get, and more often than not, you'd end up with a liquorice log rather than the hazelnut truffle.
I think I've lamented too many times about how we never do get an instruction manual for adulthood. You run through golden/emo teeneage years, eagerly awaiting for entry into that special cordoned-off section of life, only to discover once you're pass the gate, you don't really know where to go.
I've seen too many friends come and go, and honestly, I never expected things to turn out the way they did 5 years ago. But perhaps 5 years ago was a different age and idealistic mindset then, thinking everything will turn out fine once you graduate. But now people are stuck in jobs they don't want to do for the rest of their lives, yet their dreams and aspirations are fuelled by money. What are the chances of finding a job you absolutely love, with enough money to do the things you love, like travel the world or accomplish certain dreams?
I saw a graffiti in a toilet the other day. Above the toilet roll was written:
"Free Arts degree. Limit 10 per person."
I winced uncomfortably.
Lying on a big patch of green beneath a big patch of azure, we talked about days that were long gone. Jaded enough to know there was no turning back time, yet idealistic enough to wonder if there could be more.
I told myself many years ago I would not be tied down to a 9-5 desk job. But then no one told me that a house and a car cost alot more than what I can earn in a year. Someone said the term 'job' and 'fun' are binary opposites. If it's fun, it's not a job. And if it's not a job, you probably don't earn much.
In a cab today, a strangely philosophical cab driver said traffic lights were strange things. While they were symbols of civilization - they represented rules and order, they also represented an uncivilized world - where people had to be forced to obey rules.
I suppose I'm going to miss discussing about these things in 5 years time.
