"The scapegoat was a goat that was driven off into the wilderness as part of the ceremonies of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, in Judaism during the times of the Temple in Jerusalem. The rite is described in Leviticus 16. The word also refers, in modern parlance, to one who is blamed for misfortunes, often as a way of distracting attention from the real causes."

Here are a few interesting facts about goats:
- Goat meat is known as chevon. (I always thought it was mutton...) The meat of a very young goat (kid) is known as cabrito.
- Cashmere goats produce a fiber known as (you've guessed it...) cashmere, which is one of the best in the world. They also produce fibres like angora and pygora.
- The birthing of baby goats is known as 'kidding' (brings the word a whole new meaning, doesn't it?)
- During birthing, the mother often eats the placenta which gives her much needed nutrients, helps staunch her bleeding, and reduces the lure of the birth scent to predators.
