The tram lines broke today
I wasn't told how
or when
All I knew
Was that it happened
And as I walked down
the streets
I could see the hordes of people
Marching forth impatiently
Eyes piercing forward
The strain on their faces
showing, in the dim glow
of sodium bulbs
They came forth
and they came back
on both sides of the streets
Pouring out in masses
and crowding out the paths
You've never seen a sight like this
They were like
rats scurrying out of the sewers
escaping a flood
Suddenly appearing
out of nowhere
They were in their tee shirts
And they were in their suits
And they were in their dresses
And they were in their blouses
They were reading newspapers
They were listening to their I-Pods
They were reading novles
They were complaining to their neighbours
Because the trams have broken down
The streets are full of people tonight
They walked from town, they walked to town
And they were quite a sight
